Beach Boys Piano Surprise

Longtime piano technician for Artist Pianos, Steve Ostrander is a huge Beach Boys fan. In fact, he met Beach Boys guitarist, Al Jardine, back in 1978 at SPAC and met Brian Wilson once at SPAC in 2005 and again at the Belleayre Music Festival in 2008.

He also donated money to build the memorial at the site of Brian, Dennis and Carl Wilson's home, which was torn down to build a freeway.

So it was no surprise, when he heard the Beach Boys were coming to SPAC in 2012, that he sprung for VIP back-stage tickets at SPAC for him and his daughter, to celebrate his daughter's graduation from college.

Steve called us several weeks before the concert to see if the Beach Boys were going to be renting a piano from Artist Pianos for the concert. As SPAC's Piano Sponsor, Artist Pianos provides pianos all through the concert season to SPAC. However, the Beach Boys were bringing a special white piano for their tour...we just didn't know how special.

Since Steve was going to be back-stage for the sound-check anyway, he called SPAC to offer to tune the piano for free, as it would have been a pleasure to prepare the piano for a concert he was going to enjoy so much.

Well, the big day of the concert came and Steve finally got a close-up view of the piano. Much to his surprise: It was a digital piano! Or, more accurately, it was a piano shell with a digital piano installed in it. Needless to say, Steve didn't need to tune it, but he said the concert was fantastic and he and his daughter had a great time meeting all of the Beach Boys.

Here's a picture of the front of the piano, showing the keyboard insert and some kind of visual monitor, from
